Theologian, Friend and Jesus-follower in the Holy Land

My Journey to the Holy Land

Age 19, I travelled for the first time from my home country The Netherlands to the Holy Land. I felt a strong calling to serve with a messianic congregation in northern Israel. More than two years I lived and worked with Jesus-followers from Jewish and Arab backgrounds. This life-changing experience would determine the course of my life.

After I graduated from a Business Management Degree at Queen’s University Belfast, I returned to the Holy Land. This time around I felt called to serve with a Christian NGO in Jerusalem. Three years long I coordinated language classes for Palestinian youth and young professionals. It gave me a taste of the real-life experiences of those who live the ‘other side of the wall’.

When I met my future wife, we decided to begin our married life in Belgium. An opportunity opened up for me to enrol in a master’s degree in Theology & Religious Studies at the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Leuven, Belgium. During these three years a study, the main focus of my research was on the identity formation of Jesus-followers from a Jewish, Christian and Muslim backgrounds in the Holy Land. Subsequently, my complete thesis was published – using a pen name – by the Theological Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance.

The Lord called us back to the Holy Land in the beginning of 2020. I was asked to join the pastoral care team of a Christian Hospital in the hometown of Jesus. It is a joy and a blessing to serve here with my pregnant wife.
